10th NCCC CALL PICTURE

BACKGROUND
The activities of a lawyer revolve around a client, but before then, he must be briefed by the prospective client. One major challenge in client briefing is the inability of a lawyer to conduct an effective first meeting with a prospective client. A lawyer requires certain skills to effectively conduct a first time interview with a client and counsel him/her appropriately. These skills include but are not restricted to; listening skills, advising skills, communication skills, analytical skills, questioning skills. These skills are also fundamental in promoting access to justice for the poor and public interest lawyering in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, the curriculum for undergraduate studies in Faculties of Law, Nigerian Universities do not make provision for teaching of these skills. Hence the Network of University Legal Aid Institution (NULAI) developed a clinical legal education curriculum which integrated interviewing and counseling skills for law faculties/law clinics.

 THE COMPETITION

To strengthen her commitment in ensuring that law students acquire interview skills at an early stage in learning, NULAI since its establishment in 2004 introduced the Annual National Clients Interviewing and Counseling Skills Competition (NCCC). The competition provides a platform for law students in various faculties of law/campuses of the Nigeria Law School to exhibit interviewing and counseling skills with simulated life scenarios presented by trained clients in a law office setting. Winners of the National Competition represent Nigeria at the Louis M. Brown and Forrest Moisten International Client Consultation Competition (ICCC).

On December 5th-6th 2014, NULAI facilitated the 10th NCCC for Law Faculties/Campuses of the Nigerian Law School, at the Faculty of Law, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Edo State. Hosting opportunities avaliable for Law Faculties and Law School Campuses - See Details
